THRILLER STAND-IN
GOALIE TIMLOCK HEARS BOOS THEN CHEERS IN WIN The
St. Catharines Standard Saturday
July 7, 1956 What
is the difference between a hero and a “goat” in a game of lacrosse?
Last night the exact measurement of this rather intangible gauge was
obtained. It is precisely the width of Jack Timlock’s left hand. In a
game which actually defies description for breathless moments and
sustained action, St. Catharines Athletics scored a 14 – 13 overtime win
over Peterboro Trailermen last night at the Garden City Arena before the
largest crowd of the season. And the A’s can thank Timlock’s trusty
palm for the win. Rushed
into service at the last minute when regular goalie Bud Smith reported to
Tank Teather with a sore back. Timlock was alternatively good and bad in
the first three periods. The
Grantham Police Corporal made several excellent stops during the
regulation three periods, but showed the lack of experience on others as
the sharp Peterboro snipers picked the open spots. A
Hero Again In
the third period he “fanned” on three or four and the spectators
weren’t averse to letting him know their feelings. The
A’s poured in two quick goals, by Ted Howe and Don Moore early in the
“bonus” ten minutes and Timlock then settled down to protect that
margin. Bob
Curtis finally beat him to move the score up to 14 – 13 but from that
point on the husky policeman slammed the door. He
put the finishing touches to his first game before the home fans by
picking out a labelled shot from Curtis with the palm of his left hand. When
the game was over the fans and players alike streamed on the floor and
“chaired” him to the dressing room. Haven’t
been moments like that since the Memorial Cup days of the Teepees. Great
Struggle As
predicted following the tremendous battle between these two clubs two
weeks, the game last night had absolutely everything to please the public. At
one end of the crease, Moon Wootton played his usual game of breaking the
Athletic hearts but this time the A’s simply refused to quit. The only factor that tended to spoil an otherwise perfect evening was the late arrival of the Petes. The game, scheduled for 8:30, didn’t get underway till 9:38 but there wasn’t one among the crowd who left the rink before the final whistle shortly before midnight. O. L. A. Senior Standings
Back
In First The
victory by the A’s lifted them back into first place over the Petes, the
Trailermen having
In
a goal scoring way, top man of the night was Bob Curtis who found the
range four times behind Timlock. For St. Catharines, Al Frick played his
most aggressive game of the season and contributed three goals. Fire-balling
Jim McNulty added two more as did Doug Smith and the always reliable Ted
Howe. McNulty
incidentally had the game in his stick with just 20 seconds of regulation
time remaining. Given a free throw in front of Wootton, McNulty was
knocked off balance before he could get the shot away and it went over the
top of the net. Peterboro
