CHAMPION
DUFFERINS HERE MONDAY The
St. Catharines Standard Saturday
July 16, 1921 On
Monday afternoon, probably the best lacrosse game of the season will be
played on the old corner lot between the Orangeville Seniors and the
Athletics. Orangeville are champions of Ontario, having won the
Intermediate series and in the play off for the senior honors, defeated
the St. Simons of Toronto. They are using the same team this year as they
had last and will put a bunch of stars on the field on Monday afternoon.
The Athletics are in fine shape and are truly showing the old time pep. So
a good game can be expected on the old lot. The community parade on Monday
will end at the Lacrosse Grounds and to relieve the pressure of the large
numbers of people buying their tickets at the grounds, there will be
several men in the parade who will sell tickets for the game. Those
who have seen the last few games which the Athletics have played know how
good the material is that they have, and the Old Boys will be particularly
interested in some of the young blood that are playing now, that when they
lived here were youngsters playing on the street corners. Among the
newcomers are Percy Oille and Bennett. These two boys are good and fast.
MacGlashan, Purdy, May, Gayder, Crowe, all local boys are out. Goudie,
Pennie and a few others from outside are also showing a lot of pep. With
all those boys, the Athletics should give the Orangeville lads a merry
chase. ORANGEVILLE

CHAMPIONS IN
FINAL PERIOD The
St. Catharines Standard Tuesday
July 19, 1921 Before
the largest crowd of the season yesterday, the Athletics of St. Catharines
defeated Orangeville, the champions of Ontario, in a fast game of lacrosse
by a score of 8 to 7. the score was close all the way through, there never
being more than a one goal margin between the two teams except in the last
quarter when the Athletics put in three goals in a row making the score 8
to 6. The locals showed only occasional flashes of form until the final
session when they showed the old boys that they still play lacrosse in old
St. Kitts. The
game started with Orangeville getting away to a running start and they
almost scored with a pretty shot from away out. Haffey cleared nicely and
a see-saw started with the ball first at one end and then at the other.
Pople finally got a chance and found the net in five minutes. Soon after,
Haffey made a nice try, but a bad bounce put the ball out of danger. Four
minutes later Mitchell of Orangeville scored first for the visitors. The
Athletics got the rubber and made a quick attack on the Dufferin defense
but threw it away. The visitors made a nice rush and Brown registered
their second counter; time 16 minutes. There were no further scoring this
period and the score stood 2 to 1 for the visitors. Oille
went on for Crowe in this period. Oille got the ball and made a run for
the net but DeBooth got in the way and cleared nicely. Pople took the
count and had to retire from the game for a quarter. Purdy carried the
ball down the field and scored from outside in four minutes. Golden found
the net for the visitors and ten minutes later Millar got on the end of a
combination and evened the score again. Two minutes later Gordon put the
Dufferins in the lead and the quarter ended 4 to 3. The
visitors got the ball and shot. Gayder picking it out nicely, May received
the pass and scored in two minutes. The Orangeville defense was too tight
for the locals to get near the goal and Golden scored in fifteen minutes.
Score at three quarter time, 6 to 5 for the Dufferins. In
the last session the St. Kitts bunch got started and showed some real old
time form. They played around the Orangeville net but were unable to find
the net. A pretty combination put Flynn in possession of the ball in front
of the net and he easily tossed it in evening up the score. Purdy carried
the ball down the field but lost it in front of the goal. The Athletics defense
was too much for the visitors and the Athletics regained the ball. Pople
made an individual rush and score in eleven minutes. Four minutes later
Harrington registered putting the locals two points in the lead. A nice
stop by DeBooth kept May’s shot out of the net. He cleared and Gordon
scored for Orangeville one minute later. There were no further scoring and
the game ended 8 to 7 in favour of St. Catharines. May played a wonderful defense
game stopping rush after rush. The
