SMART JUNIOR TEAM FILLED IN FOR EXHIBITION GAME ON HOLIDAY

The St. Catharines Standard

Tuesday September 4, 1928

St. Catharines T & B Athletics stepped up two games in the season’s standings Saturday and Labour Day, first defeating St. Simons, who headed the league so long, and taking a holiday game from Weston.

St. Simons came over with their strongest available team Saturday, as expected, with McGregor as eager as ever, but thanks to Purdy, the marvelous Rob Roy notched nothing. He tried ‘em long and he tried ‘em short from all angles, but the gate was closed, for which we must add “thanks to Gow.”

The game was one of those thrillers that the old boys like to talk about. St. Kitts had the score 2 to 0 early in the game, but it was not long before St. Simon’s had it tied up, and so it remained 2 to 2 with less than a minute to go.

Wagstaffe with a tremendous drive netted the first and Percy Oille aided by Pennie had notched up St. Kitts second.

It was less than a minute to go when Andy Sheehan, who had been sitting on the bench for quite a spell gathering a great big rest, was sent on the field. He grabbed a pass which the fagged St. Simon’s expected to see transferred to Vince O’Brien, Pennie, Red Miller (sp) or others, and the checks of each of these men were waiting for it. Faking the pass and putting on tons of speed, Andy passed four men and getting within scoring distance, he drove in a net-bulger that made it 3 to 2, and set the crowd into ecstasies of delight. The cheers could be heard for miles.

It was just such a game that made every person regret that the season was so near a close.

Weston Defaults – Weston Juniors Here

Weston threw up the sponge in the senior O. A. L. A. and failed to place a team on the St. Catharines field yesterday. The Weston juniors, a separate organization entirely from the seniors, jumped into the breach, however, and fielded a smart bunch of youngsters to fill the engagement. Although they dropped the decision 8 to 3, the visiting youths put up a nice fight and made themselves strong with the fans.

These Weston lads won the juvenile championship last year and are favored to capture the junior title this season.

There was no heavy checking in yesterday’s fixture. Neither team tried to “cut ‘em down” and the result was a clean, fast, scintillating game.

Just before the game, E. T. Sandell, president of the local club, announced to the stands that the visitors were juniors and the game would be an exhibition affair. He offered to refund their money to any fan who wanted to leave – but not one left the stands.

During the first quarter the visitors kept the score even. Bill Pennie opened the scoring when he took a pass from Perc Oille about half way through the first period. Towards the end of the quarter Baldwin went through on a lone effort to tie the score at 1 – 1.

Weston took the lead in the second session when Darrow hooked a long pass and beat Gow on the shot. Vince O’Brien and Andy Sheehan did a little work together and O’Brien evened up the score. Red Miller grabbed a pass from Peart in front of the goal and made it 3 – 2. This was the score at the end of the first half.

Oille Scores Three

St. Kitts started to make a procession out of it when Oille picked up a loose ball after a local rush and made the score 4 – 2. Perc. Repeated shortly after when he took a pass from Max Peart to increase the margin to 5 to 2. It was a great period for Oille as he grabbed off a pass from Red Miller just before time to make it three straight goals.

Andy Sheehan and Bill Pennie combined to make the total 7 – 2, Sheehan doing the necessary. Weston registered their last goal in this session and hen O’Brien took a pass from Oille to make the final score 8 to 3. O’Brien’s shot hit the net almost simultaneously with the ringing of the final bell.

St. Kitts had a strong team on the field and had Weston sent over a senior team, they would have met with a warm reception. The defense was strong with “Farmer” Brown, Nick Purdy, Doucette and Art Herr on deck. Silk, Wagstaffe and Burnsides were the notable absentees. But Harry Bennett got in uniform and turned in a pretty game.

Oille and Pennie, along with Sheehan and O’Brien were outstanding although Max Peart and Green showed up well. Oille figured in nearly every play which resulted in a goal and was a tower of strength.
