NOTES OF THE GAME THE DAILY STANDARD WEDNESDAY MAY 10, 1905 A new home fielder for the local team arrived in the city Monday evening and was out to the preliminary practice. He is Jim Forrester, familiarly known as "Grassy", who was raised in Fergus, but who showed his speed in senior company on the Tecumsehs two seasons ago. He rested last season and comes to St. Catharines in fine physical form, having entirely recovered from his illness of some time ago. SPORTING THE DAILY STANDARD TUESDAY MAY 16, 1905 "His certificate will be here tomorrow." Words and music by Corey Hesse, sung with great success by the management of the Athletic Lacrosse Club, St. Catharines. The above popular ballad that has been breathed into the ears of enquiring worshippers of the game here by the new management committee of the local club for several days past is consigned to the forgotten list of "once populars" for the clever little goal tender has signed with St. Catharines and will play with the Athletics for 1905. Corey has been the means of spoiling more than one game for St. Catharines when on opposing teams and he has felt that he would like to get behind the Garden City defence field for some time. The Chippewas have been figuring on Corey again, but he is now a St. Catharines player and will look well scooping out hot ones from behind Don Cameron, Elliott, Richardson and Downey. Corey Hesse, St. Kitts new cracker-jack goal tender will play in the Victoria Day game here on May 24th. Forrester, the new fast centre fielder has also signed his certificate. He was out to practice Monday, as also were Elliott and Richardson, who were in uniform for the first time this season. LACROSSE THE DAILY STANDARD SATURDAY MAY 20, 1905 Twelve senior men were out to practice on the Catherine street grounds Friday night, to say nothing of about 40 amateurs all in uniform. The railbirds were delighted with the showing made by Forrester. His snappy stick handling and speed on his feet set the railbirds talking. Jack O' Gorman, one of the comers, has a great admirer in Donald Cameron. "Billy" Elliott is one who is a Missourian in opinion as to juniors. He withholds complimentary judgment and generally has to be shown. Yet he has to find a word of commendation for O' Gorman. He is almost the equal of Kalls as a brilliant stick handler, is faster on his feet and always shows some judgment. Kalls has taken on weight since last year and on this point has his brother ex-Young Athletic at a disadvantage. The lacrosse season will be opened here on Victoria Day, May 24th, when the two old rivals, Brantford and St. Kitts, will cross sticks. The great rivalry existing between these two crack teams is causing a great deal of excitement and no doubt a very large crowd will celebrate Victoria Day by watching a keenly contested game. The local team practices this afternoon, Monday and Tuesday nights, and will be in better condition than at any previous opening game. The Athletics will present some great talent here on Victoria Day. Cory Hesse, the greatest goal tender in Canada, will don an Athletic uniform for the first time and in front of him will be Ed Harris, a St. Kitts home brew, who won a great reputation for himself last year. Then come Don Cameron and "Billy" Elliott, probably the two greatest defence players now in the game: these together with a defence field composed of Richardson, L. Tufford, Pete Barnett and "Tod" Downey, of which three are to be selected, will form the greatest defence that has ever been gathered together. "Hopper" Forrester, of Tecumseh and Fergus fame, will play centre, and if the railbirds speak the truth, he is a "cracker-jack." The home field will be fast, and will be composed of O' Gorman, Kalls and Lowe. Ed Hagan will play inside home and is getting into great condition. 1905 C.L.A.
