St. Catharines Standard (reprinted

June 22, 1921 To
bring back reminders of the good days of lacrosse to those old-timers who
now enjoy the national pastime from the grand stand and to give the new
element some light regarding senior champions in the days when lacrosse
was the outstanding sport in the Dominion, a review of the senior winners
will be of interest. It was way back in 1887 when the first championship
was competed for and it was won by Toronto. Since then it has been
competed for without interruption. In the earlier years the game was
played in many towns that are not now represented. For instance the Brants
of Paris were champions in 1888, while Seaforth won in 1895. Toronto teams
have won it on eight different occasions, with Young Torontos in the lead
with three titles. The Blue and White were champions in 1915 and the two
following years. The
Athletics of St. Catharines are, however, the real leaders and the Garden
City can well lay claim to the name of the “home of lacrosse.” Teams
from across the lake have won the honors ten times, or twice more than
Toronto. That certainly is a great record. Starting in 1905, the Athletics
won the title eight times in succession, the streak being stopped in 1913
by the Excelsiors of Brampton. In 1899 and 1890 the Athletics won the
honors also. There
is only one blot on the championship record. That was in 1919 when the
race was unsettled. It will be remembered that there was considerable
trouble over where the final game would take place and the season ended up
with no contest taking place. List
