May 3, 1947 The
St. Catharines Athletics last night displayed some of the class that made
them the Mann Cup champions of all Canada when they downed the Rochester
Iroquois at the Flower City Armories 24 to 20 to capture the International
winter cup title. With the series deadlocked at a game apiece, the issue
hinged on the third start and Rochester gained a 3 – 2 lead on the
champs in the first period. Coach Cleverley shook up his Canadians then,
who took over the van early in the second and held the braves to one tally
while rolling in the next 6 in a row at 8 – 4. The third period was wide
open and had the crowd of around 2,500 on its toes most of the time as the
rivals indulged in a freewheeling and heavy scoring spree. No
less than 20 goals were zipped past enemy goalies, 12 to the Athletics and
8 to the Iroquois, setting the tally at 20 – 12 for the period siren.
Big Bill Whittaker worked the first periods for the A’s and cup champ
Doug Favell the last two, with Bruce Hill all the way for the Iroquois.
With eight counters to the good, the Mann Cuppers fairly matched attack
and defence in the final period offsetting various thrusts of Rochester,
to merit their 4 goal margin at the final, although the homesters
outscored the visitors 8 to 4 in the hot stretch drive. Rochester
