History of the A's

The Early Boxla Years

The new seven-man game of box lacrosse (boxla) officially came on the scene for the senior Athletics in the year of 1933, and none to soon to save lacrosse in St. Catharines. An outdoor lacrosse box was built at the City Sports Park and the game soon began a very remarkable resurgence in the Garden City.

The period from 1932 to 1935 were the worst years of the Depression, but the city could still brag about the opening of the fourth Welland Canal in 1932, having 9,000 registered motorcars and a total population of 25,000.
